Tropical Storm Andrea has sustained winds of 60 mph, just a bit shy of a category one hurricane, but it will remain that way and not bump up as landfall is happening now. She will continue across most of the East Coast states, first inland, then out to sea.
A lot going on with the eastern periphery of the system. TWS Tornado Watch 30 remains in effect for tornadoes and some have been reported with the system. This system has strong shear on the east side of it so they are treated like any other surface low in the area, with the dynamics being on the eastern and southern side of the center of Andrea.
It seems a hurricane with a similar name (Andrew) was at the highest of the scale, while Andrea is at the lowest. Don’t let that fool you because Andrea will rid the east coast states, producing strong winds and even flooding to a large part of the regions that were hit by Irene last year. 3-6″ of rainfall will be likely for those regions.
Andrea will affect the Carolinas tonight, into Southeast Virginia. TWS Tornado Watch 31 is taking care of those areas as tornadoes will be likely.
According to my numbers, Andrea should go over Cape Cod, MA and then hit Nova Scotia as it exits the United States.
