A tornado that was stationary in Northern Kansas on Tuesday was one for the record books. Ef5 winds were recorded in a tornado that sat in nearly the same location for over an hour.
The tornado was focused on by the Doppler On Wheels trucks (DOW). Wind speeds were measured at over 240 mph with it. According to Dr. Josh Wurman, he’s never seen anything like it.
“I’ve just never seen a violent tornado sit there for over an hour,” said Wurman. “It was the perfect setup for engaging around the tornado without having to put people in the way. There was about a 2.5 km region (1.5 mile diameter) with winds of 100 mph or more. If this were moving, say, 2 mph, it would mean 45 minutes of 100 mph winds.”
TheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin says this was caused by a blocking pattern.
“The storm likely got squeezed between the steering flow at 18,000 feet,” said Martin. “A ridge to the east and a storm to the west kept it in place. Had this been over a town it would have caused EF5 damage, but NOAA classified this event as an official EF4.”
Meteorologists will likely never see a storm like this again. A violent wedge tornado a half a mile wide just sitting there and not doing anything other than destroying trees. We have the article with the radar images so click here for those.
