TheWeatherSpace.com issued an Enhanced Tornado Watch for Northern Kansas on Monday afternoon and this yielded two large tornadoes within the northern side of it, making the issuance warranted.

052813aTheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin issued the watch at 2:10pm Central Daylight Time on Monday afternoon. Conditions were becoming favorable for strong to violent tornadoes. Enhanced Tornado Watches are not issued unless violent tornadoes are expected.

“The cap held off a lot of stronger convection to the south,” said Martin. “It could have been pretty bad in Central Kansas if that cap broke but it did not, thankfully. The watch issuance was warranted as numerous reports of two large tornadoes were within the boundaries of the watch product.”

Many spotters reported a mile-wide tornado, with wind speeds measured on the Tornado Intercept Vehicle of EF3 to EF4 status.

Later in the evening to night, a rain-wrapped tornado did damage to Marysville, Kansas. This was also likely a violent tornado. Survey teams will be out on Tuesday.

According to Martin this is only the start of a long streak of tornado producing storms over the next several days.

“Tomorrow the focus is North and Central Kansas, along the boundary that fired the storms today,” said Martin. “We will have all the dynamics for violent tornadoes and if the cap breaks, all heck will break loose once again. Discreet supercells will be likely once again with rain-wrapped wedge tornadoes.”
