TheWeatherSpace.com has issued TWS Tornado Watch 014
Effective this afternoon into the night hours
Issued May 19, 2024 – 12:55 p.m. CDT
A frontal zone located over East Central Kansas will continue moving eastward, with expansion into Missouri as well. This frontal zone will initially be non-tornadic as the storms form, but indications are that as evening moves around, low level shear will be more than enough for tornadoes, and Joplin, MO is one of the included cities.
Current trends suggest a storm motion of 35 to 45 mph with some moving 50 mph. An upper level jet will be over the area, which is what yesterday lacked. This, combined with the shear/instability profiles will be enough for tornadoes. One thing I’m not too keen on is the dewpoint depression for the ones that are wedge type and root to the ground.
We could see strong tornadoes out there, especially the tail end through Central Oklahoma, Southeast Kansas, and Southwest Missouri. Sadly, Joplin lies in the path.

We are from Joplin originally and were there 5-22-11.
We have sinced moved away, but our families
are still there. Today is eerily similar to 5-22 and is also Graduation for
the High School. I’m sure everyone in Joplin is mindful
of the similarities. Thanks for reporting and updating the weather.
Another graduation and tornado weather in Joplin! I am sure folks there were mindful on the 19th. My niece’s aunt’s sister was one of the people killed in Joplin when she was visiting there for graduation. Our family lived through the rural Cincinnati, Arkansas tornado on New Year’s Eve 2010. Two of our kids lost their homes. Such an outpouring of totes full of supplies we were given after that tornado, we were able to pass the blessings on to Joplin.
Praying for everyone during these terrible storms. Thank you Kevin and staff for your long hours and faithful efforts to keep us informed.
