A private issued tornado watch gave Texas viewers of TheWeatherSpace.com a five-hour lead-time over a tornado watch later issued by the National Weather Service at 6pm CDT on Wednesday.
TWS Tornado Watch 011 was issued at 1:10pm Central Daylight Time. No severe storms were in place from what I can gather in the archived radar data, however TheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin was certain tornadoes would hit.
“I had to get that watch out early,” said Martin. “Shear and instability profiles suggested that stronger tornadoes would also be likely, thus I issued that wording on the official tornado watch product. I was pretty confused why the National Weather Service did not issue one until tornadoes were already being reported. The atmosphere was incredibly ripe for tornadoes today.”
TheWeatherSpace.com Tornado Watches are private issued over the Website and over a free e-mail alert system that viewers can take advantage of. These tornado watches will never be seen on your local media or broadcast via your radio because they are issued by TheWeatherSpace.com and not a product of the National Weather Service.
There are many sites out there that call Martin a fraud but with a day like today how can you say such a thing? Martin issued a lifesaving tornado watch on-time when NOAA did not. That’s a hero in my book.
“This was great!,” said Andrea via TWS Facebook. “I’m in DFW and shared this after TWS announced it on the site for everyone in the area. My mom who is from OKC was amazed as we got the the NWS at 6pm while at gymnastics. Thanks again Kevin for keeping us informed!”
With over 27,000 people and climbing, people are fast becoming aware of Martin’s capability to run a weather service during inclement events. Martin is the only person on TheWeatherSpace.com that runs the weather sections, the rest of the staff (including me) run the astronomy and geology sections.
From the look of some of the radar scans, we had some strong tornadoes out there today,” said Martin. “This was caused by the subtropical jet interaction and strong upper level divergence profiles across the area, coupled with strong instability and very low dewpoint depression. It was the perfect scenario for tornadoes in Texas.”
Martin is forecasting more severe storms through the weekend as a storm system shapes up over the Pacific Ocean.
